Thanks to a generous donation by an MSU alumnus, Bruce Redwine, the carillon in the Hardin Tower will undergo a complete renovation in 2002-2003. The process began at 8:00 a.m. on October 10 when the 35 bells, and steel framework on which they are hung, were hoisted from the belfry. The bells are being loaded on a truck for transport to Georgetown, Ohio where they will be fitted with new clappers, framework, keyboard and transmission system connecting the clappers to the keyboard. Two new bells will be cast, bringing the total number of bells to 37. Additionally, the carillon will be equipped to automatically play the Westminster chime on the quarter hour and strike the hour.

The bells in the MSU carillon were cast by the Royal Petit and Fritsen Bell Foundry of Aarle-Rixtel, The Netherlands, and were installed in the Hardin Hall tower in 1952. The bells range in weight from 640 pounds for the largest and lowest pitched bell to 24 pounds for the smallest and highest pitched. The carillon was the first to be installed in the State of Texas. The dedicatory recital was played by Frederick Marriott, Carillonneur of the University of Chicago.
